In A Nutshell: The 2015 Women of Distinction Luncheon

“You don’t have to have a title to be a leader.”

Jan Rees-Jones, this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award honoree, shared those encouraging words with more than 800 guests during the 2015 Women of Distinction Luncheon. Rees-Jones is a well-known Dallas philanthropist who has dedicated her life to ensuring that others have the resources they need to succeed, and hearing those words reassured us that there’s no role too small that doesn’t make a big difference, and that great change can come from anyone. Take it from this year’s Young Women of Distinction. Almost out of high school, they’ve already helped their community in great ways. Thanks to Sruthi Tummala’s Gold Award project that showed 4th graders the fun of math and science, those children now have a reason to explore those fields even more! And because of Devin Bray’s life-saving Gold Award project, pet owners can feel safe knowing that in the event of a fire, their pets have the same chance of survival as they do.

In a sea of supporters, sponsors and gold awardees, we were honored to hear from passionate education advocates and Reshma Saujani, the Girls Who Code CEO aiming for “world domination” by ensuring girls everywhere have the chance to learn about computer coding.

There was a lot to gather from the October 14 event. For one we know that the work being done to provide amazing opportunities for girls, though bearing fruit, is hardly done. Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas has a lot good things to look forward to in the coming months (an exciting, new membership year, the STEM Center of Excellence at Camp Whispering Cedars) but our efforts will never stop. We simply have too many supporters and hard-working volunteers and staff that want to see these girls succeed. And during events like Women of Distinction, when we get to see those efforts pay off in the form of Sruthi Tummala and Devin Bray, it’s a reminder that we’re doing everything right.

This year’s luncheon was truly unforgettable and we realize that none of it would be possible without our Girl Scout family! A BIG thanks to everyone who helped make that day special including the presenting sponsor, AT&T, our wonderful luncheon chair, Katherine Coker, and keynote speaker. And a HUGE thanks to this year’s honorees Jan Rees-Jones, Michele Bobadilla, Tincy Miller, Devin Bray and Sruthi Tummala. This was definitely the best one yet!

*Stay tuned for a later post with more photos from the luncheon!
