Not long before check-in began did people show up bright and early both ready and anxious about the day (and membership year) ahead. Everywhere you looked there was green: green hats, green shirts, green balloons and green boas! Despite the morning heat and time of day, volunteers, staff and Girl Scouts brought their love of the organization with them. After a while it was easy to forget how many times we hit the snooze button and just enjoy being around our biggest supporters.
As always, vendors from all over came out to support our girls and talk about the fun, new opportunities they can experience this time around. New and old program partners lined both sides of the building’s hallways, and at the middle point, a table of pastries, danishes, fresh fruit and much needed coffee. The first hour came and went before the crowds thinned and the first training sessions started. Information about the cookie program, the Girl Scout brand and volunteer resources were discussed from one classroom to the next. Outside, the halls stayed relatively quiet until just after 10 a.m. when the general session was about to start at any minute.
We heard exiting things about the council’s future from our CEO, learned about Kit Addleman, GSNETX Board Chair, and her fascinating close ties to the origins of Girl Scouts, and learned about interesting generational traits from our amazing guest speaker Amy Lynch, who showed us that regardless of our generational differences we’re all working toward the same goal.
Afterward, we just couldn’t last a minute more without lunch and for the next few hours, volunteers ate and talked with each other before heading back for another round of training sessions and fun team-building exercises.
To top off the fun-filled day, everyone gathered back into the main hall for a celebration of volunteers and service units that have earned either the Owl Award or President’s Award. It was a new take on what we’ve done in the past, but it only reinforced the feeling that we’re all in this together and that we do great work.
(congrats on your new grandson, Eric!)
After a Kickoff like this, we don’t have any doubts that this new membership year will be the best one yet!
