Three days is all it takes for Girl Scouts to learn about food science, experience hands-on STEM activities and create more memories with their friends! The Cedars reMIX series was from July 7 through July 9 and we were there on Tuesday to see what fun they’d be up to this time. It all started with a gooey science experiment that involved corn starch and water…
Time to team up…
…before heading out under the sun for the experiment. First, water was added to each group’s bowl.
Then cornstarch was added (the gooey and messy part) where each girl’s reaction to the consistency was different from the next.
After seeing how the two elements reacted together, the girls realized that this stuff is actually pretty hard to get off
Thankfully a hose was nearby and girls had just as much fun washing their hands
With dry hands, the girls entered the main hall to see chefs create tasty food and learn the science behind each dish. Here, chef Tim showed them how to make Tzatziki, a Greek sauce. Step by step he mixed Greek yogurt with chopped, peeled cucumber, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and dill.
Chef Danyelle was also on hand to show girls how to make grilled pineapple sprinkled in brown sugar and cinnamon. Tim showed another group of girls how to prepare this dish too.
Did You Know that when sugar melts, it caramelizes to make for a sticky, sweet syrup? Yum!
Over in another room, it was time for a new STEM activity. Using pool tubing, cotton balls, pipe cleaner, string and a little teamwork, girls worked together to make a thermometer.
Another successful event with a lot of happy girls!
