For three days, Cadettes got to see what college is like when they spent time at Mountain View College and Camp Whispering Cedars for a series of fun, STEM-related activities and a mentor luncheon. One of the cool experiments they conducted was yeast fermentation testing:
Girls saw up-close how yeast reacts in different settings including room temperature, and cold, hot and boiling water
Afterward, they entered their data into an excel spreadsheet. This experiment was a complete mirror of a microbiology course offered at the college!
For another activity, Girl Scouts learned about aquaponics. Aquaponics is a fun and efficient way of growing food in a water-based environment with the help of aquatic animals like prawns, crayfish and snails.
On their way inside the greenhouse
Did you know that 60 percent of the Mountain View student population go without meals? Cadettes made their way to the college’s community garden to plant vegetables like carrots and peppers to make a difference.
When it came to engineering, girls had to build structures that could withstand heavy shaking
After building their shake structure, it was time to put them to the test
During the Hold Your Water challenge, girls were divided into teams where they had to sketch, build and test a device that could safely drop a cup of water at least 7 feet below. The goal was to retain as much water as possible.
FUN FACT: This activity was adapted from National Engineers Week by FLUOR!
Time to test the structure…
After so much work and brainpower being used, girls fueled up on yummy food during the mentor luncheon where they met with women in STEM and received great tips and advice.
After lunch, girls tried their hand at the art of 3D animation where they learned technical information and contributed their ideas
One cool way of learning about 3D technology is interacting with it in the ICube, a 3D virtual cave!
There was so much to learn in such a short amount of time but don’t worry, we set aside a time girls to earn their Field Day badge
All topped off with a relaxing yoga session
*Special thanks to FLUOR and Mountain View College for providing a fun and safe haven for Girl Scouts to dream BIG!
